Can a weekend at a friend’s beach house help them to rediscover the love they once shared?CHANGE OF LIFELila Chapin’s husband and sons take her for granted, and when they forget her fortieth birthday, she decides withdraw a chunk of money from the bank—her birthday present to herself—and spend a month in an inn by the beach, where she thinks no one can find her. Ken Chapin loves his wife—but he has been neglecting her as he claws his way up the corporate ladder. Finally arriving on the top rung, he realizes his success is meaningless without Lila by his side. He and his sons are going to have to find her and woo her back.CRY UNCLEPamela Hayes needs a place to hide. She flees to steamy, sandy Key West, where bartender Jonas Brenner offers her a new identity if she’ll pretend to be a prim, proper mother-figure for his wild-child niece. But the deal will work only if Pam and Joe can keep their emotions out of it—and that’s easier said than done.HOLDING HANDSMeredith Fischer’s widowed mother is starting a new romance. Her daughter is enjoying an exuberant social life. But Meredith’s marriage is comatose and barely breathing. She still loves her sexy husband, but he doesn’t see her, doesn’t hear her, and may be involved with one of the cute young students at the college where he teaches. Meredith can either pull the plug on her marriage or try to revive it with a romantic weekend at the beach. But how romantic can that getaway be when Mother Nature and a stray dog stand in her way?

PDF Life's A Beach: Boxed Set with Free MOBI EDITION!

This box set includes the following:Book 1 Best Friends, originally published in 1987 as a Harlequin American, friends-to-lovers, makeover romance.Book 2 One Good Turn, originally published in 1990 as a Harlequin American, reunion romance.Book 3 Change of Life, originally published in 1990 as a Harlequin American, resuscitated-marriage romance.Book 4 Cry Uncle, originally published in 1995 as a Harlequin Superromance, marriage-of-convenience, romantic suspense.Book 5 Holding Hands, novella originally indie-published in 2012 by the author, resuscitated-marriage romance.Typically a romance series consists of three or more books which the author has published no more than a year apart. The romantic protagonists of each book in the series tend to be linked together by friendship or blood and/or because they live in the same small town or work at the same company in the same big city. In the case of this particular series, the link between these books is that the setting for each of these novels is a beach, and the original publication dates are many years apart.BEST FRIENDSPlot Premise: When they were in college together, Lonny was a handsome ladies’ man, and Samantha was frumpy and, in her own opinion, fat. Early in their acquaintance, he friend-zoned her, and during the subsequent years, she’s accepted philosophically her platonic status, because it keeps her in Lonny’s life—unlike all the other women who have flitted in and out of his arms, never to be seen again. But suddenly, when Lonny invites her to recuperate at his seaside home in New Jersey from the heartache of being dumped by her longtime, live-in boyfriend, his attitude toward her begins to change. He is no longer looking at her as simply good old Samantha. There’s actual desire in his eyes, which Samantha had never hoped to see. She’s both tempted and scared. If she gives in to romance with Lonny, will she gain a committed lover, or will she, instead, ruin the best friendship she’s ever likely to have?Opinion: Naturally enough, given that this novel is over 30 years old, the story is a bit dated, but fans of this type of romance plot will enjoy this non-melodramatic, comfort read.ONE GOOD TURNPlot Premise: When Luke and Jenny first met seven years before, he was in a very difficult place, and Jenny’s emotional support was invaluable to him. Unfortunately, soon after he regained his footing, Jenny broke his heart when she disappeared. In the intervening years, Luke has never seen or heard from Jenny, until the day she suddenly reappears in his life. He is shocked at the major changes in her. She is no longer the sunny optimist he used to know. In fact, she seems to be struggling emotionally as much he was in the past. He is determined to offer her the same helping hand she extended to him. He very much hopes that if the two of them spend a weekend together at a friend’s beach house, it will provide Jenny with a chance to heal her wounds and, most of all, for the two of them to rediscover the love that they lost.Opinion: This story is told in two parts, the past relationship of the romantic protagonists, and their reunion in the present. This format is a bit cumbersome, and the story is a bit dated, but overall this is a pleasant, undemanding read.CHANGE OF LIFEPlot Premise: Lila Chapin has been married for 16 years and is thoroughly burned out with her life as a neglected, stay-at-home wife and mother. Her husband Ken is a workaholic, who has basically left the vast majority of the responsibility for raising their two sons, 10-year-old Michael and 8-year-old Danny, on her shoulders, and both he and the boys have been taking her for granted for a long time now. When Ken and the boys forget the major turning point of her 40th birthday, it is the final straw for Lila. She withdraws enough money from her joint, marital bank account for a month-long solo vacation at a beachside inn. She leaves a note for Ken telling him why she’s going and for how long, but not where. Meanwhile, Ken and the boys painfully come to realize that they’ve completely blown it and decide they absolutely must find Lila and win her forgiveness.Opinion: The premise of Lila never having any boundaries and just stuffing down her resentment day after day, year after year, until she has finally gunny-sacked enough injustices for a guilt-free disappearing act seems rather passive-aggressive. But this approach to a midlife marital crisis is not unexpected from a 1990 Harlequin American, a line of romances focusing on family relationships as much as the central romantic one. On the plus side, I believe this particular plot will satisfy an emotional need of unhappy, neglected wives everywhere, who can vicariously experience through this HEA romance the positive possibility of a successfully resuscitated, moribund marriage.CRY UNCLEPlot Premise: Pamela Hayes was a key witness in the murder trial of a hit man named Mick in Seattle, but it ended up in a mistrial. The murderer is on the loose and is determined to kill her before a new trial can happen. Rather than opting for protective custody, Pamela flees on her own to Key West, Florida where a sexy, earring-wearing, laid-back bartender named Jonas Brenner makes her an irresistible offer. He will provide her with a new identity as his wife, in name only, so that carrying his last name can prevent the hit man from tracking her down. All she has to do in exchange is help him win custody of his orphaned, young niece, a rambunctious five-year-old named Elizabeth, who insists everyone call her, “Lizard.” Pamela will only need to play the part of a prim and proper mother figure to Lizard until custody is granted. After that, Jonas assures her (and himself), they will be free to dissolve the marriage, and she can return to her own life as soon as killer Mick has been thrown in jail.Opinion: This book was originally published in 1995 as a Harlequin Superromance, marriage-of-convenience, romantic-suspense novel. That particular line no longer exists, but it seems to have been a kind of amalgam of the current-day romance lines of Harlequin Special Edition and Harlequin Romantic Suspense. It’s a bit of a jarring combination of a classic Harlequin American (currently Harlequin Heartwarming), small-town, family-oriented plot with a “woman in jeopardy,” suspense plot. However, this is a quick, easy read in the colorful setting of the Florida Keys, and it is, fortunately, light on melodrama. In addition, readers who love quirky, precocious, child characters will enjoy Lizard.HOLDING HANDSPlot Premise: Meredith Fischer is 40-something, and her kids are all grown and in college. She’s recently slimmed down and is looking better than she has in years. But even so, she doesn’t feel she can successfully compete with all the nubile young women who surround her college-professor husband, Scott. She still loves him and remains physically attracted to her handsome husband. But she believes he doesn’t love her anymore and, worse, she fears he might be having an affair. Given that distressing reality, she is convinced she has only two choices: give up and file for a divorce, or try to revive her marriage by arranging a romantic getaway on the beach with Scott.Opinion: Unlike the other four books in this box set, this novella is of much more recent vintage and is not a reissue. It was indie-published as a brand new work in 2012 by the author herself. Similar to Change of Life, this is an HEA, resuscitated-marriage romance. It is definitely not a “curvy” romance, because the heroine feels she must earn her husband’s love and fidelity by losing weight and presenting an attractive appearance. She also feels somewhat jealous and competitive toward her mother and daughter, who both seem to be better equipped than she to have exciting romance in their lives. Readers who enjoy the resuscitated-marriage trope will find this novella to be a well written and enjoyable romance.
