As a wildlife ecologist, I have long been aware of the ecological damage done by free-range dogs and cats. This book catalogues the argument against free-range cats and, to a lesser extent, argues against cats in general. This book is very thorough and provides more information than would probably be necessary to meet their objective. The history of conflict between cat-lovers and wildlife-lovers is portrayed relatively fairly, the ecological horrors that cats inflict is well-documented, and even cat-borne diseases are discussed. Some of the information is exaggerated and, because the book is clearly biased against cats, it is worth reading some literature from the opposing perspective as well. In particular, the disease risks of cats are blown a little out of proportion.Despite these potential detractors, I recommend that everyone read this book. It provides invaluable insight into the problem of free-ranging cats in a format that everyone can understand. Hopefully, environmentally-conscience cat owners take the practical message to heart, despite the fairly biased approach of the authors.
